If you are concerned about whether you are being stopped by a legitimate police officer, here are some steps to follow:
-Look for obvious signs, such as a marked police car and some type of police uniform.
-If you are still not sure, ask to see the officer's credentials.
-You can call 911 to verify that a police officer is actually the person stopping you
-Definitely use this if you are stopped by an UNMARKED car and the officer is not in uniform.
-Many traffic officers drive UNMARKED cars, but should be in uniform.
-Pull over in a well lit area and if you have to travel some distance to get to that area, put on your flashers, call 911 and let the dispatcher know what you are doing.
Fayetteville Police Department
The Fayetteville Police Department has established its presence on Nixle (www.nixle.com), an innovative online tool that provides alerts to citizens wishing to get up to the minute information via email and text message at no charge.
Citizens can create a free account at Nixle.com and tailor what type of messages they receive and how they would like them delivered. Typically, messages cover different categories including traffic, community, advisory, and urgent alert messages.
All citizens are encouraged to sign up, particularly members of community watch groups or those hoping to provide information to law enforcement agencies that will help solve cases, find missing persons or learn ways to reduce crime within the community.
